Strikes
There are 4 different weak strikes. 2 are punches, and 2 are kicks. Punches are for close up encounters and kicks are when you are alittle more distant from your opponent. Tap B to do one punch or kick, hold the direction and tap B to do the second type of punch or kick. Its really easy. I swear. No seriously. I'm not saying anything why are you still reading? Anyway...
There are 3 different strong strikes. This requires you to put alittle more effort in the button pushing. Yes this means you have to hold the button, not tap it. Hold B to do one strong strike, Hold the Dpad and B to do a second, and A+B to do a third. Its slightly harder than the weak strikes, that is, if your a panzy.
Grapples
To do a weak grapple, Tap A, and to do a strong grapple, Hold A. Congradulations, your half way into doing a move.
Both grapples are different in power and moves (obviously) but are controlled the same way. You use the A and B buttons in unison with the dpad. Each direction + button (A or B NOT BOTH) does something different.
Controls during a grapple are as follows
D-Pad - Moves wrestlers
Joystick - Does Special move (during special, obviously)
B button - Does different moves with each direction held
A button - Same as B
R button - Breaks grapple
L button - Goes behind or infront
C down - Irish Whip, bangs head into stuff, Back grapple: Restrains
C left - no use
C up - (front with Dpad) throws out of ring; Back grapple: Sets up for doomsday device
C right - No use
Z button - No use
Start - Pause (yep, that much hasnt changed)
Note that when you throw your opponent out of they ring, they stay out longer if you Strong grappled them.
The whip of the Irish
Irish whipping people is fun. When you irish whip someone, you have the choice of what to do to them as they hit the ropes and come back.
B button - Strikes them down
A button - Irish Whip Grapple. Theres 4. Tap A or hold A. Theres different sets from whips from a weak grapple and whips from a strong grapple.
L button - irish whip evasion (leapfrog or duckdown)
R button - blocks (they either bump into you or they fall, depending on their fatigue
Joystick - catches them for a finisher during special
Start - Why do I even bother
Running
When you suck, the best thing to do is run. The boys in the back are lonely and need a good time, and if they get their hands on you, they'll show No mercy. (hehehe)
On a serious note... Theres 4 different running attacks you can do. 2 sets of 2, much like the irish whip grapples but different. If you press C down alone you will run towards your opponent. You can either press B, or A + B, and thats the first set of running strikes. The second set involves you pressing the dpad and then C down, and doing that makes you run in the direction you pressed on the Dpad. When your running in a direction, you have 2 different running strikes, but same buttons as the first set. This isnt rocket science.
If you press A while running you will do a running grapple. There are 2, a front and a back grapple. Sometimes you will find yourself doing a 3rd move, simply because your opponent turned around mid grapple, but it really depends on moveset.
You can press R during a grapple to roll or cartwheel, depending on who you are. Press L to dodge the opponent and keep running. Press C down with a direction to stop running. Press start to pause the game and get yourself a glass of water, which im about to do right now.
Ok, up to this point you should know how to Strike, Grapple, Irish Whip, and Run. Alot of this is pointless to type because you can see all the buttons you need to press in the create a wrestler mode. I'm not going into that much detail from here on in because you should pretty much be able to get the idea.
Turnbuckle Fun
Now, if you weak grapple and press C-down plus a corner direction (ex. upper left, lower right, etc) you will whip them into the corner. A weak grapple whip will send them there to stay, but a strong grapple whip will bounce them off the corner, doing alittle damage, and they slowly walk back toward you. (on a side note, if your back is to the turnbuckle during a strong grapple, and you press the Dpad in the direction of the turnbuckle, you will beat their head on it.)
For now, you whipped them with a weak grapple, ok? good. Once they are in the corner you have alot of choices. Being that it is NO MERCY, you have alot of choices for the demise of your opponent. In this situation, you can strike him, run at him and strike him, Weak grapple him, Strong grapple him, Remove him with R, and turn him around with L.
In a turnbuckle grapple, you have quite a few choices. Weak and strong grapple is the same deal with the buttons. A or B with directional buttons for each blah blah. C down will whip them into the opposite corner, the whip affects stay the same as above with weak or strong grapple. During a turnbuckle back grapple, all you can do is moves and release them pretty much.
The joystick will do a turnbuckle special. R will break the grapple releasing the opponent. L during a turnbuckle grapple will turn them upside down on the turnbuckle. Its kinda mean, but hey, its no mercy, right?
In the tree of woe, you can either strike them, or run at them and strike them. Grappling wont do anything but bring em back down.
To climb the turnbuckle, press the Dpad in the direction of the turnbuckle and hold C down to run into it and climb it. Release C down to fly. Theres 6 different moves you can do in the air, and each one depends on the situation. Attack to the inside, attack to the outside, attack during special. There are 2 sets those apply to, when the opponent is down and when he is standing.
While on the turnbuckle, you can press R to climb off and save yourself from an unnecessary risk, or press the joystick to taunt before your move. (like the big boys on TV)
While off the turnbuckle, walk into it with the Dpad and hold the joystick to do a corner taunt. Also, with some superstars, they have a 2nd rope diving attack. For example, rikishi has the BONZAI drop. The opponent has to be down by the turnbuckle, then you walk into it and hold a, and they should climb the second rope and fall.
The Apron and Ropes
This is where the heated battle between the ring and the floor takes place.
You can knock your opponent onto the apron with a strong strike if his back is to the ropes. (sometimes but rarely your opponent will fly over completely) While your opponent is on the apron you can strike him down or grapple.
The move you do in the grapple varies only with the weak and strong grapple. During an apron grapple, you can release with R, or if you press C down you can run his head into a turnbuckle post.
If you are outside and your opponent is on the apron you can strike him down with B or pull him down with A.
While YOU are on the apron, you can grapple, strike, get off or in the ring with Dpad + C up, Run to and climb a turnbuckle with Dpad + C down, Taunt with Joystick, and dodge moves with L or R. Press the Dpad + A in the direction of the ring and some superstars do a diving attack into the ring. Also, if your opponent is outside, very few superstars do a dive to the outside from the apron. Run and press A to do that.
The Grapple system is pretty much the same, except there is a possibility for a special grapple from the apron. Also, if you grapple the back of the opponent, you just restrain them. (on a side note, if you whip an opponent into the turnbuckle and turn him around so his back is to the ring, you can do a front strong apron grapple to him.)
Now, your opponent is on the outside, right? right. You are in the ring. You have a choice of 3 diving attacks. The first one is holding the Dpad toward your opponent while your pressed up against the ropes and press A. That will do what they call a plancha (i think) where you basically use the ropes to throw yourself into your opponent. The second and third are very similar. You remember how i said that you can run towards your opponent with C down and run in another direction with Dpad and C down and it results in different moves? Same thing applies here. You have to be on the other side of the ring away from your opponent, with your back to the ropes. Press C down and hold A and you will run and dive out to your opponent. Most superstars do a baseball slide here. The third variation is pressing the dpad away from your opponent and TAPPING C down to bounce off the ropes and come back, and once you bounce, hold A and you'll do the dive. Also, you can do an apron taunt this way by replacing A with the Joystick. Jeff hardy does the 619.
The reason I emphasized tapping is simple. If your opponent is outside and your in the ring and hold C down, you run to em and just slide out of the ring.
The Ground Game
So you have succeeded in getting your opponent on the ground. Congradulations! This is where they are most vulnerable. You can strike them, dive on them from the turnbuckle, and thats just the obvious.
Press the L button to Pin.
Press C left to flip them over between stomach and back, and hold C left and any direction to drag them.
The grapples you do vary with the situation. Mainly whether you are at their head or feet, and whether theyre on their stomach or back. Also, some people have ground specials. Example being Benoit does the crossface during special while the opponent is facing down and benoit is at his head.
If you press C down you jump over them, and if you run with the dpad and hold C down you will jump over them and keep running (like the rock when he does his peoples elbow which might i add is his ground head facing up special)
If you press B while running, you do a running strike to them, simple and plain.
If you tap R once while they are on their back, you raise them up into the sitting up position. From here you can do different strikes and grapples. Same if they are on their stomach, but thats called the sitting down position.
If you Hold R, you pick them up onto their feet and they are groggy and open to anything you throw at them. While they are groggy however, you can push them around, and turn them around with L. This makes it easier to hit running back grapples and such.
If you are knocked down, hold R and when you get up, you will be ducked down and have 3 choices. B for Strike, A for grapple (weak grapple, but when you have special its a strong grapple) or L to roll back and away from your opponent.
Hardcore
Ok, maybe you arent such a girl thingy, but just because you left the ring dont mean nuts. Theres still padding on the floor. On the outside though you are exposed to alot more. I'll run you through the fun stuff.
You should know how to grab a weapon, press the Dpad toward the crowd and press C left. While holding the weapon, you can drop it with R or A, Tap B for a weak shot, Hold B for a strong shot, run and press B for a running shot, and Press C left to throw it at your opponent. It helps in handicap matches because a throw can hit 3 people at a time. You can also taunt while holding a weapon.
-Run in the direction of the ring to slide back in if your a girl thingy
-If you irish whip them into the turnbuckle, it makes a funny noise.
-Move around in a grapple and put your back to a barricade or wall. Press the Dpad in that direction and Press C down to hit your opponents head into it.
-With a table, you can do the same as above, but you can also throw them on with Dpad + C up. Then Climb it with C down.
-You irish whip your opponent to go backstage. On the Stage set you can usually find weapons off the edge of the stage. When you go deeper backstage, weapons are scattered about. There are 5 different backstage rooms, which are the Hallway, the locker room, boiler room, parking lot, and the bar. The hallway gives access to the latter 4.
-You can climb into the truck in the parkinglot and if your opponent is outside, press the Dpad in their direction and press A and you will do a double axe handle. Same applies for a table.
-Lay weapons on the ground and do a move to your opponent onto them for additional damage.
-lay weapons on a table for a ridiculous spot.
Ladder Tips
-Press C left to pick up, C left again to set up.
-C up climbs, C up + dpad down jumps down.
-While at the top of the ladder reaching for the belt Tap B
-Other than the above, it handles like any other weapon except you cannot throw it.
Cage Match Tips.
-Grapple and press C Left to throw them into the cage
-C up + dpad climbs the cage
-Keep tapping B at the top to get out
The trick with these matches is you have to make sure your opponent is down and out. Also, your special goes down while climbing a cage, so the best thing to do is have special when you climb it.
SPECIAL!
You do a Special move during a Strong grapple while you have a special. To do yours, flick the joystick. To Copy your opponent's, Press A and B at the same time.
You can do a specail from:
Front grapple
Back grapple
Front turnbuckle grapple
Back turnbuckle grapple
Ground (press A)
Irish whip (just press the joystick when they come back)
Flying attack special (just climb the turnbuckle when you have special and let it fly)
Apron grapple Special (strong grapple from apron, hard as hell to hit)
3 ways, 4 ways, Tags, and whatever.
-Go to your partner and press the Dpad in his direction + C up to tag
-Double Team moves = much damage
-Set up for a doomsday device (back grapple + C up) and someone will climb the TB and hit it with you.
The double team moves are done when 2 people excecute a grapple on a 3rd person at the same time. The variations are done in one of 4 ways. Both teammates are in front, both in back, one in back one in front, and during an irish whip (which is how the dudleyz hit the 3-D)
Little known fact: While one player is in a grapple, if he presses L to rotate his opponent, his partner can grapple the same opponent in the middle of it to make the double team move successful.
How To Play No Mercy like a Man
Theres alot of people that play this game to win. This isnt smackdown. I hate to see people resort to constant taunting and hitting 3 specials to win matches. Wrestling is about wearing your opponent down until you get the victory. Here are some tips:
-Start off slow. A weak strike hear and there, some weak grapples. Dont jump into the match doing strong grapples. Either the match will be too short and unenjoyable, or, and this is much more likely, you will be reversed like crazy to the point where you cant even look at him anymore without getting reversed somehow.
-Keep on the submissions. if your opponents special is getting too high, a submission will steadily lower it more and more, depending on how tired your opponent is.
-Work one body part. Always. This doesnt even have to be limited to doing the same move and submission over and over again. Be creative. Its called no mercy for a reason. The head is the easiest thing to work. Headlocks, sleeperholds, DDTs, and thats only moves. On top of that you can run their head into the turnbuckle, whip them into it head first, bang their head on the barricade or table, piledrive them onto a weapon, hell even turn them upside down on a turnbuckle and dropkick them in the face. USE YOUR SURROUNDINGS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!! THATS WHAT MAKES IT FUN!!!
-Theres alot of ways to lower your opponents special that are always overlooked. A prime example of that is the irish whip evasion. you know you could whip them to the ropes, stay by the opposite ropes and when they come press L. Theyll fly over you onto the apron, leaving them vulnerable.
-When you feel like its time to start putting them away, hit a few strong grapples. This especially helps if your working to get them to tap. One big move like a neckdrop could make the difference.
-Finishing moves make the ending of the match look pretty, but I try to end my matches different every time. Heres a good example. The Rock does a single knee drop off the top to a downed opponent. What I did instead of the rock bottom or the peoples elbow was I made my opponents feet toward the turnbuckle, sat them up so theyre looking at the turnbuckle. THEN i did the knee drop onto em driving them back into the ground. It looked alot like a top rope Shining Wizard, it made sense, and it was AWSOME. Some people like to make their opponent sit down (on all fours) and do a leg drop to add the fameasser/scizzor kick effect. BE CREATIVE!
Small catch some dont notice
At one point in a match, you may notice your opponents special raising more than it should be. Special shouldnt go up while hes doing a submission, so why is it? you may ask. When a superstar has sustained alot of damage, theres a turnaround point where his special will raise alot faster than usual to kinda give him a kick back into it. Its not only the CPU, if youve taken a beating and try to come back with a submission, it will raise your special as well as lower your opponents.
